CALL FOR PAPERS & PANELS SECOND WORKSHOP  on 

Security & Stability in the Mediterranean and the Middle East

 to be held on 25-26-27 May 2017 in Athens, Greece

This Workshop is organized by the Institute of International Economic Relations (IIER/IDOS) of Athens in collaboration with:

• University of Catania, Italy
• Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean (Rhodes), Greece
• University of Auvergne, Clermont Ferrand, France
• Research Unit on European & International Studies, University of Zaragoza, Spain.

RATIONALE

The related questions of Security and Stability in the Mediterranean continue to trouble the international system and the international agenda:  for instance, the consequences of the failed coup in Turkey, the ongoing violence in Syria, Iraq and Libya as well as the migration and refugee crises. The direct and indirect involvement of local, regional and global powers render the Mare Nostrum  a key area for the future of the European Union (EU)’s relationship with the Mediterranean countries and beyond. As a result there is a need to go beyond conventional understandings of security with the objective of helping to solve the ongoing political conflicts in the Euro-Mediterranean region and of bringing peace and stability to the region.

The general topics of the Workshop may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Security in the Mediterranean and the Broader Middle East

• The unknown future of Syria
• Iran and Turkey the Middle East: New challenges ahead
• Perspectives on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict
• State and Society in the Middle East: The challenge of the Arab Spring
• Islam and democracy in Arab states
• Economic security and change in the Middle East states
• The United States, the Russian Federation and other BRICS, as external actors in the Middle East and the Mediterranean

Ø The International Political Economy of energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

2. Turkey after the coup attempt

• The local, regional and international consequences of the failed coup of July 2016
• Implications for EU–Turkish relations
• The United States-Russia-Turkey triangle
• Turkey and the war in Syria
• International terrorism and Turkey
• Turkey and energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean
• Turkey, Iran and the Persian Gulf states.

3. Migration and Human Security in the Mediterranean and the Middle East

• The political and economic consequences of the refugee crisis

Ø Problems and prospects for migration in the Mediterranean regionØ Irregular migration, state security and human security in the Mediterranean

• Migration, human security and foreign policy

Ø EU Security and migration policies in the Mediterranean

• Human security and climate change in the Mediterranean

Ø Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in the Mediterranean.

4. The present and future of Euro-Mediterranean relations

• Development and evaluation for the Union for Mediterranean
• Prospects of regional and sub-regional cooperation in the Mediterranean area
• The Europeanisation process of Third Mediterranean Countries
• The revised European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) after the Arab Spring
• Normative Power Europe and the Mediterranean

Ø Trade relations between Mediterranean EU countries and other Mediterranean statesØ The consequences of the economic crisis for the process of EU- Mediterranean relations Ø Cultural and religious dialogues in the Mediterranean and the role of the EUØ Parliamentary dimensions of EU-Mediterranean relations.

Please submit your paper abstract (300-350 words) or your panel proposals (up to four papers per panel) by 16^th January 2017, which should include: the paper argument, its theoretical background, some tentative conclusions and other overall methodological approaches of the topic. It is required from all participants to attach to the abstract a file with their personal data: Names, title, status, corresponding address, telephone and fax numbers and email.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by 30^th January 2017, and the deadline for the submission of the papers will be on 28^th April 2017.

Accepted papers givers who do not send their papers by the paper submission deadline of 28^th April 2017 will NOT be accepted as speakers.

The Conference will be held in downtown Athens at the premises of the Institute of International Economic Relations.

After scholarly peer review, the Organisers will publish a significant number of the Conference’s papers in an edited Volume, while other papers will be submitted to academic journals or published on the website of the Institute.

PARTICIPATION FEES AND EARLY-BIRD REGISTRATION DATES:

Until 10^th April 2017: 150 euros per person

After 10^th April 2017: 225 euros per person

Fees will cover all papers in electronic form, two buffet lunches and a farewell reception.
