In this lecture and conversation, the speaker will refer to two related topics. In the first part, they will address the IR implications of the Israel-Hamas War from the perspective of Israeli foreign policy and its relations with other countries, both at the regional level and at the international/systemic level. The most salient implication of this war has been the return of the Palestinian issue to center stage at all levels of analysis. Hence, in the second part of the talk, the speaker will focus on possible scenarios for the transition from war to peace. In that context, they will refer to the possibility of peaceful change between Israel and the Palestinians in the aftermath of the war.
Arie M. Kacowicz is a Professor of International Relations and the Chaim Weizmann Chair in International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A Faculty member at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 1993, he was the Chair of the Department of International Relations in 2005-2008 and was the President of the Israeli Association of International Studies in 2017-2021. He has been an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University since 2002. He is the author and editor of ten books, mostly dealing with peace in international relations. His current research projects include the study of the relevance of the international society after the decline of the Liberal International Order; the development of a matrix to understand and explain the global governance of international politics; and exploring alternative paths to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (with a focus upon the Confederation blueprint).
