Event – Learning from Covid: Political and Public Health Lessons

Events 27 Oct 2024

INVITATION

The Research Program on the Theory and Practice of International Relations at the Institute of International Economic Relations (IIER), Greece organizes the event:

Learning from Covid: Political and Public Health Lessons

Richard Ned Lebow and Feng Zhang ask a set of related questions about responses to COVID-19 by Western physicians, epidemiologists, public health authorities, and governments. To what historical events and lessons did they turn to understand the pandemic and guide their initial responses to the pandemic? Why did they choose these events and lessons over others? How did they subsequently evaluate these analogies and lessons? What new lessons were generated by the pandemic? They accordingly explore three “waves” of learning, two short-term in nature and focused on preventing the spread of a new virus. The other longer-term are concerned with preventing or responding to a future pandemic. Vassilis Kontozamanis and Iosif Plymakis evaluate the response to Covid–19 of the Greek public health system and the lessons  learned from this experience as well as the social, political and economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in Greece.
