Αn event devoted to the presentation and discussion of the report “China in the Security Conundrum of Europe’s Southeastern Periphery” published by the Institute of International Economic Relations (IEER) and took place at its premises on 4th November 2025.
The report was presented by the co-authors Mr Plamen Tonchev , Head of Asia Unit at IIER, and Mr Vasilis Petropoulos , IIER Associate Researcher, with the participation of research assistants Irini Ellinitaki, Konstantia Mexa, Chrysoula Pythoula. Mr Costantinos Tsimonis , Head of the China Program of the Institute of International Relations (IDIS), offered his comments as a discussant.
The Report examines how China’s engagement—through infrastructure projects, technology cooperation political dialogue and soft diplomacy —interacts with the complex security environment of Europe’s Southeastern Periphery, an environment already shaped by EU integration process, NATO’s role, the threats from Russia after the invasion in Ukraine and the persistent influence of regional actors as well as of United States.
